We turned out our cows last week. We like to calve outside, calves seem to stay healthier that way. It was a nice day, the morning was kind of cool and my horse was a little fresh. Personally I like to know that my horse feels good on these brisk mornings, as long as he isn't serious about bucking! I noticed these little flowers while in the drag. Ranunculus is a large genus of about 600 species of plants in the Ranunculaceae, we know them as Butter Cups. Technically they are a weed, and are poisonous, but are one of my favorite flowers. Nothing makes me think spring more than these little guys, and they remind me of my great grandma. It was always a race to see who could find grandma the first Butter Cup every spring.
The cows traveled really good, and we made it the 8 miles in about 2 hours. Here Julio trails them through the lane at Rabbit Creek with "Chief."

TR and QT are all set to brand calves. I've been trying to tell them that we don't have enough calves yet to brand, we just started calving the night we got the cows moved! When they get their minds set, it's hard to tell them otherwise! I'm really looking forward to the day when they will be able to go with me when we move cows and start taking their own horses when we brand. They should be pretty handy guys here before too long!
You know, it never fails. The day after we kick out all the cows it snows! That's what has been going on here! What's happening in your part of the world?
Love the blog! Thanks for sharing
